- Following the workshop on the Physics of Parchment organized at the University of Namur (2019), numerous participants had expressed their interest in carrying on their multidisciplinary interactions about the historical fabrication of parchments and, in particular, about ways of recognizing which animal skins were used. This wish came true with the parchment-making workshop, which took place at the Gîte of Haugimont (UNamur, Belgium) from 7 to 11 September 2020, in the framework of the Pergamenum21 project, and in collaboration with the Beasts To Craft (B2C) project.

The organizers (Olivier Deparis, Catherine Charles) invited Jiri Vnoucek (B2C project) to come and share his knowledge and long-standing parchment-making expertise. In addition to members of the Pergamenum21 team, a few more researchers from UNamur and abroad were also present (25 participants in total).
During the week, in an enthusiastic, peaceful and joyful atmosphere, a lot of practical hard work was carried out to transform raw skins into parchments. Together with a few lectures and a commented visit at the Archaeological Society of Namur for examining old manuscripts from St Hubert Abbey, this workshop enabled each participant to shape two parchments, one made from sheepskin, the other from goatskin.
